We have arranged for a Curator’s tour of Off the Shelf: Modern & Contemporary Artists’ Books at the Baltimore Museum of Art. This lovely exhibition, recently reviewed in the national Guild’s new blog by new Potomac resident Shannon Kerner, was also facilitated by Chair Vicky Lee. A quick preview of the exhibit revealed a heavy focus on illustrated books and there is an amazing variety of printmaking methods and exploration of structures, with some greatest hits, and modern and contemporary works.

While there, Guild members will also be able to see other collections, such as hand crafts, contemporary furniture by George Nakashima and Robert Erickson, and glass by Dale Chihuly, Martin Blank, and Stephen Powell.  The tour will take approximately 2 plus hours.

Behind the Scenes at the Smithsonian

The Potomac Chapter is offering two special opportunities in early April to get an insiders view of two different Smithsonian Institution facilities; one focused on the book arts and the other on preservation.

First, please join us for a very special visit with Janet Stanley, Librarian, at the Smithsonian Museum of African Art. Janet has generously invited us into the library to view some of the books in their collection up close.  This is an opportunity to see and handle some very special artists’ books and to talk with Janet directly about her experiences collecting and curating them.

Janet is also the Curator of the exhibit Artists’ Books and Africa at the museum.  The exhibit is on display through September 11th this year and pages have just been turned so the images are all new.  The books are wonderful and many can be viewed online at Artists Books and Africa.

When:  Saturday, April 2nd at 10:30 AM
Where:  Smithsonian Museum of African Art, lobby inside the Main Entrance
RSVP:  Space is limited so please RSVP soon to GBWPotomacChapter [AT] gmail [DOT] com

Following, please join us for a tour of the the Smithsonian Libraries Pennsy Collections and Support Center in Landover, MD.  Katie Wagner, a Preservation Services Book Conservator will lead the tour.

The preservation program coordinates all library-wide activities relating to the preservation of library collections; conservation treatment of special and general collections needed for research, exhibition or digitization; collection maintenance and shelf preparation activities; commercial binding of serials and monographs; reformatting to microfilm or photocopy; disaster planning and response; and environmental control.

We will be providing transportation from the Silver Spring Metro station for those who would like it.  Please indicate your desire for a ride when you RSVP and we will send you details about where and when to meet.
